From eligibility to arrival

Studying in the United Kingdom involves more than receiving an admission offer. You also need to understand the immigration route that applies to your course, prepare acceptable evidence and calculate the financial commitment before submitting an application.

The UK Student visa is a route for eligible international students studying with a licensed education provider. A successful application depends on meeting the relevant requirements, including sponsorship, finances, English-language ability and any additional conditions that apply to your circumstances.

For Nigerian applicants and other international students, the most useful approach is to work through these requirements in a clear order. Confirm your institution and course first, understand your funding position, collect the correct documents and then complete the application through the official government website.

This guide explains the process, highlights important changes affecting late-2026 applications and helps you avoid common planning mistakes.

Important: This article provides general educational information. It does not guarantee admission or visa approval and does not replace official guidance or advice from an appropriately qualified immigration professional.

QUICK OVERVIEW

UK Student Visa at a Glance

The Student route is generally available to applicants aged 16 or above who meet its requirements. Applicants need a place with a licensed student sponsor, sufficient finances where required, appropriate English-language evidence and parental consent where applicable. Official eligibility guidance.

Treat this table as an introduction. The sections below explain why an applicant cannot determine eligibility from one requirement alone.

GUIDE / 01

What Is a UK Student Visa?

A UK Student visa provides immigration permission for eligible study. It is separate from the university or college admission process.

Three decisions should remain distinct:

Admission: The institution decides whether to offer you a place.

Sponsorship: The education provider determines whether it can sponsor your study and issue the relevant sponsorship reference.

Immigration permission: UK Visas and Immigration assesses whether your application meets the Student route requirements.

An admission letter therefore does not automatically establish that you have permission to travel, enrol or remain in the UK.

The correct study route also depends on your age, institution, course type and intended duration. GOV.UK distinguishes the Student route from other arrangements, including the Child Student route for eligible younger students at independent schools. Official study overview.

Before paying a substantial deposit, ask the institution which route applies to your programme. This question is particularly useful for foundation courses, English-language programmes, research placements and courses delivered partly outside the UK.

GUIDE / 02

Confirm Your Institution’s Sponsorship Status

Begin by checking the education provider against the official register of licensed student sponsors.

The register identifies institutions licensed to sponsor students under the relevant routes and includes information about their sponsorship category and rating.

When comparing an offer with the register, check the organisation’s legal name. A university’s marketing name, campus name or partner college may differ from the name appearing in official records.

Also ask:

  • Which organisation will issue my sponsorship reference?
  • Where will I actually study?
  • Is this specific course eligible for sponsorship?
  • What conditions must I meet before sponsorship is issued?
  • What happens to my deposit if sponsorship cannot be issued?

Use the institution’s official international admissions or student immigration team for clarification. A recruitment agent’s description should not replace confirmation from the sponsoring institution.

Keep copies of the offer, payment instructions and relevant correspondence. These records help you understand what has been promised and which conditions remain outstanding.

GUIDE / 03

Understand the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, usually called a CAS, is a sponsorship reference issued by your education provider.

GOV.UK explains that you need an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor and that the provider supplies the CAS reference. You must normally apply within six months of receiving it. Official course and CAS guidance.

A CAS should not be confused with an ordinary offer letter. Your institution may require further steps before issuing it, such as meeting academic conditions, completing an English assessment or paying an agreed deposit.

Review the information supplied with your CAS carefully. Check your name, passport details, course title, study location, dates, tuition information and recorded payments.

If something is incorrect, contact the institution before applying. Do not assume that an explanation in your application will automatically resolve an incorrect sponsorship record.

A useful approach is to compare the CAS information with your passport, admission offer and payment receipts line by line.

GUIDE / 04

Check Nationality-Specific Restrictions

Nationality can affect whether a route is available, even when an applicant has an offer and sufficient funds.

As of this article’s review date, the UK’s visa-brake guidance covers Student entry-clearance applications by main applicants who are nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan. The measure concerns applications made outside the UK and is based on nationality rather than simply where someone lives. Official visa-brake guidance.

Nigeria is not one of the four countries named in that measure. This does not mean Nigerian applicants are automatically eligible: the ordinary Student requirements still apply.

For readers from other countries, check current nationality restrictions before paying non-refundable fees. If you have more than one nationality or an unusual immigration history, obtain advice about your particular circumstances.

A general article cannot resolve every nationality or status-related issue.

GUIDE / 05

Calculate Your UK Student Visa Proof of Funds

Financial preparation is one of the most important parts of the application.

Where financial evidence is required, you generally need to cover outstanding tuition for the relevant academic year and the applicable living-cost amount. The tuition figure should be checked against your CAS.

At the time of review, the monthly maintenance amounts are £1,529 in London and £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months. London means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs. Certain applicants have exemptions or different evidence arrangements. Official money requirements.

Maintenance increase from 30 November 2026

The published Immigration Rules changes increase the monthly figures to £1,570 in London and £1,203 outside London for applications made on or after 30 November 2026. The statement specifies that applications made before that date are assessed under the earlier rules. Official statement of changes, HC 584.

Application dateLondon monthlyLondon: nine monthsOutside London monthlyOutside London: nine months
Before 30 November 2026£1,529£13,761£1,171£10,539
From 30 November 2026£1,570£14,130£1,203£10,827

The nine-month totals are calculated by multiplying the monthly amounts by nine. Tuition is additional.

Do not use the higher or lower figure simply because your course begins in a particular year. Check the rule applicable to the date you submit your visa application.

Worked financial-planning example

Suppose your CAS shows £18,000 in tuition and your institution has recorded a £5,000 payment. Your outstanding tuition would be £13,000.

For a course outside London requiring nine months of maintenance evidence, an application before 30 November 2026 would use:

£13,000 outstanding tuition + £10,539 maintenance = £23,539.

Using the scheduled later maintenance amount, the same illustration becomes:

£13,000 + £10,827 = £23,827.

These are hypothetical examples, not personalised eligibility calculations. They exclude application fees, healthcare charges, travel and other expenses.

Ask your institution to check your calculation, especially where scholarships, shorter courses, accommodation payments or dependant applications are involved.

GUIDE / 06

Understand the 28-Day Financial Evidence Rule

For relevant cash-fund evidence, GOV.UK requires the necessary money to be held for at least 28 consecutive days. The end of that period must fall within 31 days before the application date. Official financial timing guidance.

This creates two separate questions:

  1. Was the required balance maintained for the full qualifying period?
  2. Is the evidence recent enough when the application is submitted?

A statement showing enough money on its final day may not demonstrate that the balance remained sufficient throughout the period.

Prepare a financial calendar. Record when the full balance became available, when the qualifying period ends, when you will obtain evidence and your intended application date.

Check transactions during the period. Rent, transfers, bank charges or other withdrawals can reduce a balance unexpectedly.

Do not obtain a statement too early and then submit after its permitted timing window. If your application date changes, reassess the evidence.

GUIDE / 07

Which Funds and Accounts Can Be Used?

Acceptable financial evidence depends on its source and the applicable rules.

Official guidance describes routes involving personal funds, a parent’s funds, certain partner funds, qualifying student loans and official financial sponsorship. Parental funds require permission to use them, and the money must meet the relevant account and accessibility requirements. Official financial evidence guidance.

Prepare evidence that makes the arrangement understandable. If a parent is supporting you, identify which documents demonstrate the relationship and permission.

A promise from a relative is not necessarily the same as accepted financial evidence. Do not assume that every extended-family account or informal sponsorship arrangement qualifies.

For money held in foreign currency, Appendix Finance generally uses the OANDA spot exchange rate on the application date, with specified exceptions. It also sets conditions for acceptable financial institutions. Official Appendix Finance.

For Nigerian applicants, this means a fixed naira amount quoted in an old article may be unreliable. Calculate against the applicable sterling requirement and consider exchange-rate movement when planning your balance.

Never use altered statements or documents supplied by someone who cannot explain their genuine source.

GUIDE / 08

Budget Beyond the Minimum Visa Evidence

Proof of funds is an immigration requirement. Your real study budget serves a different purpose: determining whether you can afford the entire commitment.

Create a budget containing:

  • Outstanding tuition.
  • Visa application charges.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge.
  • English-language testing, if needed.
  • Tuberculosis testing, where required.
  • Document preparation and translations.
  • Flights and airport transport.
  • Accommodation deposits.
  • Food, communication and study materials.
  • Initial expenses before any funding payment arrives.
  • A contingency for delays.

The maintenance figure should not be treated as a guarantee that your chosen lifestyle or city will cost no more.

Research actual accommodation listings and ask the institution about payment schedules. A scholarship paid after enrolment may leave you needing funds before departure.

Keep confirmed funding separate from money you hope to earn through employment. A realistic plan should remain workable if finding a student job takes longer than expected.

GUIDE / 09

UK Student Visa Fees and Healthcare Charges

At the time of review, the Student visa application fee is £558 from outside the UK. The same published fee applies to extending or switching to the route from inside the UK. Official visa fees.

The amount charged in another currency should be checked through the official application process. Avoid presenting one permanent naira conversion.

Eligible student applicants generally also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. The published student rate is £776 per year, but the total depends on the period of immigration permission and applicable charging rules. Official healthcare surcharge costs.

A one-year course does not necessarily produce a surcharge for exactly one year. Your permission may include additional time, so use the official calculation rather than estimating from course length alone.

Keep the application fee, healthcare surcharge and any appointment-related services as separate budget items. A paid document-upload service or appointment upgrade should not be confused with the basic visa fee.

Check the displayed charges before payment and retain receipts.

GUIDE / 10

English-Language Requirements

You normally need to demonstrate the required English ability through an accepted method.

The published levels are generally CEFR B2 for degree-level study or above and CEFR B1 below degree level. A qualifying higher education provider can assess English itself for degree-level study, subject to the required standard. Other routes include accepted qualifications or an approved Secure English Language Test. Official English requirements.

Does every Nigerian applicant need IELTS?

There is no single answer for every course and institution.

Ask your sponsor:

  • How will my English ability be assessed?
  • What evidence will be recorded for sponsorship?
  • Is a specific approved test necessary?
  • Does my existing qualification meet the relevant requirements?
  • Is further assessment required before CAS issuance?

An admissions waiver should be understood in context. Confirm how the institution’s decision relates to the visa evidence, rather than relying on the phrase “IELTS not required” in an advertisement.

If testing is needed, book the correct test. Different products with similar names may serve different purposes.

GUIDE / 11

Prepare Your Documents

The official documents guidance identifies a valid passport or travel document and a CAS as core requirements. Additional evidence can include finances, an ATAS certificate, tuberculosis results, parental consent and relevant sponsorship consent, depending on circumstances. Applicants under 18 also need appropriate relationship evidence. Official document checklist.

Build your checklist from the application instructions and sponsor guidance.

For every document, ask:

  • Is this required for my circumstances?
  • Is it valid for the intended application date?
  • Does it match the details in my application?
  • Is the complete document readable?
  • Is a translation required?
  • Has the issuing organisation supplied the correct format?

Use clear filenames such as “Passport,” “Financial evidence” and “Sponsor letter.” Avoid sending a large collection of unrelated documents in the hope that more pages automatically strengthen an application.

Before uploading, check every page. A cropped balance, missing date or unreadable stamp can make evidence harder to assess.

GUIDE / 12

Tuberculosis Testing for Applicants From Nigeria

The general TB requirement applies where you are coming for six months or more, have lived in a listed country for at least six months and were living in that or another listed country within the previous six months. A clear-test certificate is generally valid for six months from the X-ray date. Official TB requirements.

Applicants in Nigeria should use the government’s approved Nigerian clinic information. The Home Office does not accept certificates from unapproved clinics.

Book early enough to accommodate appointments or further testing if needed. Confirm the clinic’s current instructions, identification requirements and charges directly.

This requirement concerns residence history as well as intended stay. Nigerian citizenship alone should not be used as a substitute for checking the conditions.

GUIDE / 13

Check Whether You Need an ATAS Certificate

The Academic Technology Approval Scheme can apply to certain sensitive postgraduate study and research areas, subject to nationality exemptions and course details.

Ask the institution whether your programme requires clearance. Do not assume that every science degree needs it or that every master’s course is exempt.

Official guidance states that ATAS applications take at least 30 working days, some take longer and there is no fast-track service. Official ATAS guidance.

If ATAS applies, build it into your schedule before the visa application. Keep your course description and research information consistent with the institution’s instructions.

An ATAS requirement identified late can affect your intended start date. Resolve the question during admissions rather than immediately before travel.

GUIDE / 14

Apply for Your UK Student Visa Step by Step

Step 1: Confirm the course and sponsor

Check the institution, course location and sponsorship arrangements. Resolve admission conditions before relying on a proposed start date.

Step 2: Review the CAS

Compare the sponsorship information with your passport, tuition payments and course records. Request corrections promptly.

Step 3: Complete your evidence

Check finances, English assessment, TB testing, ATAS and any age-related documents.

Step 4: Start through GOV.UK

Student visa applications are made online. The application process tells you how to prove your identity, either through the relevant identity-check process or an appointment for fingerprints and a photograph.

Use the official Student visa application page, rather than an unfamiliar website claiming to provide the only application route.

Step 5: Answer accurately

Read each question carefully. Keep your dates, education history, financial information and previous immigration details consistent.

If someone assists you, review the complete application yourself before submission. Assistance does not remove your responsibility for the information supplied.

Step 6: Pay and follow the submission instructions

Retain confirmation messages and receipts. Complete the required identity and document steps without assuming that payment alone finishes the process.

Step 7: Monitor correspondence

Check the email address used in the application, including its spam folder. Respond to genuine requests within the stated deadline.

Keep your institution informed if processing affects enrolment.

GUIDE / 15

Application Timing and Processing

For applications outside the UK, the earliest application point is generally six months before the course begins. Inside the UK, the published timing is three months before the course begins, with further conditions concerning existing permission and course dates. Official application timing.

Published usual decision times are three weeks outside the UK and eight weeks inside the UK. These are usual times, not guaranteed completion dates. Official application guidance.

Work backwards from your institution’s latest arrival date. Include time for the CAS, financial evidence, tests, appointments and possible requests for additional information.

Do not commit to non-refundable travel solely because a typical processing period appears to fit your timetable.

If a faster service is offered, check its actual conditions. Paying more does not guarantee a favourable decision.

GUIDE / 16

Preparing for a Credibility Interview

The Home Office assesses whether applicants are genuine students and may consider application information alongside a credibility interview. Official caseworker guidance.

Prepare by understanding your own plans. Useful topics to review include:

  • Why you selected the course.
  • How it relates to your education or work.
  • Why you chose the institution.
  • What you know about its modules.
  • How you will pay tuition and living expenses.
  • Where you expect to live.
  • What you intend to do after studying.

Practise explaining these points clearly, but do not memorise someone else’s story.

If your course represents a change in direction, be ready to explain it honestly. A career change can have a reasonable explanation; invented experience creates a different problem.

An interview preparation service should help you understand your genuine application, not provide fabricated answers.

GUIDE / 17

Can You Bring Your Partner or Children?

Dependant permission is restricted.

The official guidance identifies qualifying government-sponsored students and qualifying postgraduate students. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the relevant route generally requires a PhD, another doctorate or a research-based higher degree. The other conditions still apply. Official dependant requirements.

A typical taught master’s offer should therefore not be assumed to allow dependants.

Before planning family relocation, obtain confirmation about the course’s classification and check:

  • Whether your study qualifies.
  • Whether the relationship requirements are met.
  • Which financial evidence is needed.
  • Separate application and healthcare costs.
  • Housing and childcare expenses.
  • The application arrangements for each family member.

A dependant’s application is not automatically approved because the main applicant receives a visa.

Avoid paying family travel costs until the necessary permissions and arrangements are clear.

GUIDE / 18

Working While Studying

Work permission depends on your course and sponsor.

Appendix Student permits up to 20 hours per week during term time for relevant full-time degree-level study with a qualifying higher education provider. Certain qualifying below-degree courses allow 10 hours, while other arrangements may not permit work. Official Student rules.

Check your own conditions and ask the institution to explain its official term dates.

Do not assume that a dissertation period is automatically a vacation. Track all relevant working hours rather than considering each employer separately.

The Student route also restricts activities such as self-employment and professional sport. Official permitted activities.

Treat remote work, freelancing or operating a business as questions requiring careful checking, rather than assuming they fall outside the rules because payment comes from abroad.

Student employment can provide experience, but it should not be your only plan for financing essential study costs.

GUIDE / 19

Scholarships and the Visa Application

A scholarship can help meet costs, but its name does not tell you everything about its coverage.

Read the award letter and identify:

  • The exact funding amount.
  • Whether tuition is paid directly.
  • Whether a living stipend is included.
  • The funding period.
  • Payment dates.
  • Any conditions or exclusions.
  • Whether additional personal funds are needed.

“Full tuition” does not necessarily mean flights, accommodation or healthcare charges are covered.

Financial sponsorship and loan evidence have their own requirements. Use the official financial-evidence guidance when deciding how an award supports your application.

Ask the institution or provider to clarify ambiguous wording before submission.

You can explore Spreemkt’s scholarship resources for research, but final award terms must come from the organisation responsible.

GUIDE / 20

Your eVisa and Travel Preparation

An eVisa is an online record of immigration status. Follow the instructions for accessing it and keeping relevant account and travel-document information accurate. Official eVisa guidance.

After a successful decision, check your name, permission dates and conditions. Raise errors before travel where possible.

GOV.UK explains that permitted arrival before a course generally depends on course length: up to one week for courses of six months or less, or up to one month for longer courses. You must not travel before your permission’s start date. Official travel timing.

Prepare accommodation, transport and essential records before departure. Keep accessible copies of the decision, institution contact details, address and funding information.

Once you arrive, complete enrolment and the institution’s required checks. Ask its international student team if you are unsure how to demonstrate your status.

GUIDE / 21

Extending or Switching Immigration Permission

Further study may require an extension, but eligibility should be checked separately from admission to a new course.

The extension guidance includes conditions relating to sponsorship and academic progression, with exceptions in particular circumstances.

Contact your institution before your existing permission expires. A new offer does not automatically extend your right to remain.

Some immigration categories cannot switch to Student permission from inside the UK. GOV.UK lists restrictions including visitors and short-term students. Official switching requirements.

Do not travel as a visitor on the assumption that you can convert that status after arrival.

If your situation involves previous refusals, interrupted study or expiring permission, seek help early enough to understand your options.

GUIDE / 22

The Graduate Visa After Study

Eligible graduates may be able to apply for a Graduate visa after completing qualifying study.

Current guidance states that the permission lasts:

  • Two years for applications made on or before 31 December 2026.
  • 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027.
  • Three years for eligible PhD or other doctoral graduates.

Applicants must meet the route’s conditions, including being in the UK and applying before their Student permission expires. The institution must have reported successful completion. Official Graduate visa guidance.

For someone starting a course in late 2026, the future Graduate application date is particularly important.

Do not choose a programme using an old promise of a two-year post-study period without checking the rule that will apply.

Post-study permission is also separate from getting a job. Employers still make recruitment decisions, and longer-term immigration options require their own assessment.

GUIDE / 23

Common Application Mistakes

Several avoidable problems begin during preparation rather than on submission day.

Using outdated costs: Recheck maintenance and application charges close to submission.

Confusing admission with sponsorship: Confirm the CAS and outstanding conditions.

Relying on unclear funding: Identify which funds qualify and whether the documents prove them.

Submitting inconsistent details: Compare names, dates and payments across your records.

Leaving specialist requirements late: Resolve ATAS, tests and translations early.

Assuming dependants qualify: Check the actual course and family rules.

Depending on future wages: Build a budget around reliable resources.

Following guaranteed-approval claims: No intermediary can promise the Home Office’s decision.

A practical final review is to ask another trusted person to check consistency while protecting your personal documents.

GUIDE / 24

If the Application Is Refused

Read the decision carefully and identify its stated reasons.

Separate the issue into categories: eligibility, evidence, credibility, timing or another concern. Do not assume that submitting the same documents again will resolve it.

The decision should explain any available review or challenge arrangements. Check the specific instructions and deadlines rather than relying on advice intended for another visa category.

Speak with the institution about the effect on your start date and sponsorship. Where appropriate, obtain advice from a qualified immigration professional.

Before making another payment, understand what must change and whether the relevant evidence can genuinely be supplied.

Avoid anyone offering to “remove” a refusal from your history or telling you to conceal it.

GUIDE / 25

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a UK Student visa cost?

The published application fee is £558 at the review date. Healthcare charges and other preparation costs are additional. Check the official payment amount when applying.

How much proof of funds do I need?

Where required, calculate the applicable outstanding tuition plus maintenance. Study location, course duration, exemptions and application date affect the result.

Can I study without IELTS?

Possibly, depending on the accepted English assessment. Confirm your sponsor’s approach and the visa evidence rather than relying on a general waiver advertisement.

Can my parent support me financially?

Parental funds can be relevant where the required conditions and documents are met. Check permission, relationship evidence and the account requirements.

Can I bring my spouse on a taught master’s?

Do not assume so. Current dependant restrictions mean the exact course and sponsorship circumstances must be checked.

Can I work 20 hours every week?

Only if your conditions allow it. The relevant limit applies during term time, and work permission differs between courses and sponsors.

Does a scholarship guarantee a visa?

No. Funding may support an application, but the other requirements still apply.

Can I apply through Spreemkt?

Spreemkt provides information and research guidance. Submit the visa application through the official government channel.

GUIDE / 26
