Looking for caregiver jobs in Australia with visa sponsorship? The opportunities are real, but the correct visa pathway and employer matter. This guide focuses on verifiable Australian immigration rules and practical application steps, not promises of guaranteed placement.

Can foreigners get caregiver jobs in Australia with visa sponsorship?

Yes, eligible international applicants can be sponsored for certain aged care jobs in Australia. The Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement (ACILA) allows qualifying aged care employers to sponsor overseas workers in three direct-care occupations: Aged or Disabled Carer (ANZSCO 423111), Nursing Support Worker (423312), and Personal Care Assistant (423313). Sponsorship is not automatic: a genuine employer must offer an eligible role and nominate the applicant under an applicable agreement.

For a broader look at working in Australia and its visa options, see our dedicated guide. This guide explains how the system works, what experience and English scores may be needed, where to search for real vacancies, and how to avoid scams. It is written for applicants already in Australia and people applying from countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, India, the Philippines and elsewhere.

Quick answer: Start by checking whether your duties match one of the three eligible occupations, review the official labour agreement terms, and apply directly to employers who can sponsor overseas workers. A job advert mentioning “sponsorship” is not proof that an overseas applicant qualifies.

Which caregiver jobs qualify for sponsorship?

The title caregiver is broad. For the aged care industry agreement, the actual nominated occupation and its duties matter more than the wording in the advertisement.

OccupationANZSCO codeTypical duties
Aged or Disabled Carer423111Personal care, companionship and support with daily living
Nursing Support Worker423312Assistance with patient care under nursing supervision
Personal Care Assistant423313Personal hygiene, mobility, meals and routine support

For a wider overview of jobs and opportunities in Australia, visit our Australia hub. Related job titles may include residential aged care worker, assistant in nursing, care assistant, home care worker and personal support worker. However, a home care or disability support position does not automatically fall under ACILA. The Australian Government explicitly says disability-sector employers cannot use the aged care agreement merely to recruit these occupations; they may need another eligible pathway such as a regional DAMA.

Care workers may support people with bathing, dressing, meals, safe movement, social interaction and care documentation. Tasks involving medication or clinical treatment must remain within the worker’s training, supervision and permitted scope.

What visas can Australian aged care employers sponsor?

Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), Labour Agreement stream

This temporary visa allows a suitably nominated worker to work in Australia, generally for up to four years depending on the agreement. The employer must have the relevant labour agreement and nominate the worker in an occupation covered by it. Applicants must also meet the applicable skills, English, health and character conditions. It is not an open work permit for any Australian employer.

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

The aged care agreement also includes a permanent residence pathway for qualifying workers. The published agreement specifies at least two years of relevant direct care experience in Australia for its permanent residence route and an age limit for subclass 186 applicants. The existence of a pathway does not guarantee permanent residence after two years; the employer must nominate the applicant and all current conditions must be satisfied.

For context on other employer-sponsored routes, read our Australia work visa and application guide.

Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMAs)

Some designated regional areas have tailored employer-sponsored arrangements. Their eligible occupations, concessions and employer conditions vary. A regional job is not automatically a DAMA job, so check the exact area and agreement before applying.

Read the official subclass 482 Labour Agreement stream guidance.

Eligibility: qualifications, experience, English and skills assessment

Qualifications or work experience

The aged care agreement provides an occupational route based on a relevant AQF Certificate III (or equivalent or higher relevant qualification) or at least 12 months of relevant full-time experience, or its part-time equivalent. However, the applicable skills assessment, nomination and visa rules still need to be met. An unrelated short online certificate does not necessarily count as an Australian Certificate III equivalent.

English-language scores

Applicant categoryPublished IELTS terms under ACILA
Subclass 482, standard aged care providerOverall 5.0; speaking/listening at least 5.0 each; reading/writing at least 4.5 each
Subclass 482, eligible culturally and linguistically diverse providerOverall 4.5 with no component minimum, conditional on fluency in the target community language
Subclass 186 under the agreementOverall 5.5 with no component minimum

Accepted equivalent tests and exemptions are governed by current immigration rules. The lower culturally and linguistically diverse provider concession is not available to every employer.

Skills assessments

For Aged or Disabled Carer, check Community Work Australia. For Nursing Support Worker and Personal Care Assistant, check ANMAC. A positive skills assessment does not itself secure employment or a visa.

Other common requirements

Employers may request references, background checks, infection-control knowledge, manual-handling training, first aid, and a driver’s licence for community-based roles. Visa applications can require police clearances, medical examinations and adequate health insurance. Requirements vary by employer and applicant.

How much do caregivers earn in Australia in 2026?

Australian aged care pay depends on award classification, qualifications, employment arrangement, employer, location and shifts. There is no single wage that applies to every sponsored caregiver.

As a verified illustration, the Fair Work Ombudsman describes a Certificate III-qualified personal care worker whose relevant Aged Care Award base rate increased to AUD 36.23 per hour from 1 July 2026. At 38 paid hours weekly for 52 weeks, that example equals approximately AUD 71,590 gross annually, before tax, overtime, allowances or other variations. It is an example for that classification, not a promise of salary for all jobs.

Important: Check the current Aged Care Award pay guide and your applicable enterprise agreement. A sponsorship income threshold is not permission to pay below the lawful wage.

Weekend and public holiday penalties, superannuation, overtime and leave entitlements may apply. Accommodation, airfare and relocation support are not automatic benefits of sponsorship; read the employment contract.

Where to find genuine caregiver sponsorship vacancies

Our guide to finding international job opportunities explains practical ways to research overseas vacancies. Search official employer websites alongside established recruitment platforms. Start with the Department of Home Affairs list of current labour agreements, then identify aged care employers and review their own careers pages. The list shows agreement holders; it does not certify that a company currently has an open vacancy or will sponsor a particular applicant.

Useful search phrases include “aged care labour agreement overseas applicants”, “personal care assistant 482 sponsorship”, “aged or disabled carer 423111 sponsor” and “regional aged care visa sponsorship”. Check each advert’s location, experience requirements, work-rights wording and whether overseas applications are accepted.

What to ask a recruiter

Ask: “Does your organisation hold an active aged care labour agreement or another appropriate sponsorship arrangement? Is this vacancy open to candidates outside Australia? Which ANZSCO occupation will be nominated, and what assessments and experience do you require?”

How to apply from Nigeria or another country: step by step

Before applying, you can review our jobs abroad resource page for wider job-search guidance.

  1. Match your experience to an occupation. Compare your real day-to-day duties against the relevant occupation description and ANZSCO code.
  2. Prepare an Australian-style CV. Include care settings, employment dates, duties, qualifications, relevant training and verifiable referees. Keep it concise and tailored.
  3. Collect evidence. Gather certificates, detailed employer references, contracts and other reliable proof of paid relevant work.
  4. Check assessment and English requirements. Use the correct assessing authority and official immigration guidance before spending money.
  5. Find employers able to sponsor. Search current labour agreement holders and genuine job listings, then apply directly.
  6. Attend interviews. Prepare examples showing dignity, safeguarding, communication, safe mobility assistance, teamwork and infection prevention.
  7. Review the offer. Confirm the employing entity, job location, guaranteed hours, award rate, sponsorship route and any lawful relocation benefits.
  8. Follow the nomination and visa process. The employer handles the relevant nomination; you provide truthful visa documents through official channels.
  9. Travel only after appropriate approval. Review your visa grant, work conditions, health insurance and initial accommodation arrangements.

For applicants from Nigeria, a verifiable employment history and relevant practical care experience are particularly valuable. A Nigerian nursing qualification may support your background but does not automatically grant Australian nurse registration or establish a particular skills assessment outcome.

Caregiver application document checklist

For more tips on researching employers and preparing an overseas job search, see how to find international job opportunities.

  • Valid passport
  • Australian-style CV and tailored cover letter
  • Relevant education and training certificates
  • Detailed employment reference letters and supporting evidence
  • English-language results if required
  • Skills assessment where applicable
  • Police certificates and health checks when requested
  • Employment offer, contract and nomination information
  • Dependent family documents where relevant

Do not submit fabricated employment letters or buy a qualification. Inaccurate information can damage an application and create serious immigration consequences.

Application costs and relocation planning

If you are comparing destinations, our countries guide for jobs and scholarships provides a starting point. Applicants may need to budget for English testing, skills assessment, medical examinations, police certificates, visa charges, airfare, temporary accommodation and initial living expenses. The actual visa application charge varies by stream, applicant and any applicable concession, and can change. Use the official visa pricing estimator rather than relying on an old fixed fee quoted by a recruiter.

Never assume an employer must provide free accommodation or flights. Discuss any relocation allowance in writing and distinguish personal application costs from sponsorship costs that the employer is legally required to bear.

How to avoid fake sponsorship and recruitment scams

You can explore additional overseas employment guidance on the Spreemkt blog. Australian law prohibits buying or selling visa sponsorship. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed visas, asking you to pay for a sponsorship slot, directing payments to personal accounts, refusing to name the employer or sending a job offer without a credible recruitment process.

Verify the employer through its official website, cross-check business details, and confirm migration advice credentials through the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority. Australian workplace rights apply to migrant workers; see the Fair Work Ombudsman guidance for visa holders.

Social platforms can help you discover leads, but a Facebook post, WhatsApp message or TikTok video is not evidence of an approved sponsor or an available visa.
